you might run into mobility issues against armies like the Wood Elf or Lizardman Skink shooting army of doom. But if he never sees them, it might work.

what armies and point totals does he usually face? He has Lord-level characters in there but not a lot of core.

I think what u had put here is a good option for tzeentch, but I rather use the warshrines with the MoT, they give u a little boost on the units and also the gain 3+ Gs

But as said before u need more mobility and probably dont use Archaon he is quite expensive in points, and chaos is expensive so, is gonna be difficult to face expirienced players with few units, no much space for errors

Archaon is over 600pts on his own, you can get 15 Chaos Knights for that and I don't need to tell you which one will do more damage and last longer.

There are plenty of options for Chaos but taking beefy and expensive special characters should be reserved for when you're going over 3kpts.

He asked. Maybe a 3 ogre dragons and a chaos dragon instead of Archaon?

The best way to approach things would be want to do want the army to do?

I know it's easy and nice enough to pick units you like the look of, I have no problems with that (Archaon makes a pretty sweet looking Chaos Lord) but really you want to have an idea what they are going to do on the table top.

My Chaos Giant has the Mark of Khorne and it designed to one shot chariots (the Black Coach being a chariot and I don't suffer from Terror because I have a Giant hehe). My Chaos Lord has to declare and accept challenges, so he is designed around fighting challenges with a unit of Knights to back him up. My Warhounds are to flank the enemy and deny them rank bonuses and harrass anything hiding at the back. My Marauder Horsemen bait units unto unfavourable charges as well as provide support to my Knight blocks. The Knights are there to be the blunt force trauma to rip stuff apart.

The whole army is designed with roles in mind and what they are best at facing. I would advise your friend to ask himself what he wants that Chaos Dragon to do and see if it is the best choice for the job, likewise with the Dragon Ogres.

Just a quick note: minimum unit sizes are
Knights = 5
Marauder Horses = 5
and 1 chariot = about 7 Chaos Warriors...of which minimum unit size is 10
also, you need 2 - 3 core units depending on sub or over 2K points, and assuming 2K +, that means 3

If you go khorne, you said cavalry, so go with 3 units at 5 apiece of marauder Horsemen
a unit of Knights
a Giant
your general and I would take a scroll caddy.
that puts you about 80+80+80+250+230ish+ general's points so you are still well under 2K but have a pretty good base cavalry core.

Including Warband games, 21-4-2 total

Off the top of my head:
Your Nurgle force looks like it'd be more infantry based. If so the Warshrine is a good option and maybe as the army gets bigger a unit of Chosen could be combined with the Warshrine. One of the strongest things about Nurgle though is it's magic so I'd have 2 Lvl 2 Sorcerers. If you're going infantry heavy palanquins are good for them as they help fill out units and make it cheaper to increase your rank bonus. If you do that though be sure to try and give them a ward save or magic armour etc. if you can afford it points wise.
