Hey guys,it appears I'm running very low on some paints, mainly of the green variety but I was wondering, what are your opinions of the Citadel Foundation set of paints?

I'm thinking of getting them based off of their price anyway.

I don't even know what's so special about them.

Don't try to thin these paint, the results can be very chalky

Foundation paints are ideal for a nice base coat over darker colours like black. They have more pigment what makes them less (or more?!?) opaque, makes for a nice cover-in-one-stroke. Downside is that these paints dry out very quickly. So take a drop into your palette and keep watering it down. They blend well with other colors thank god, but you must keep on mixing, as it often SEEMS as if the mix will 'unmix'. Just give it a good stir and you're good to go again.

If you are using advanced techniques like glazing, use foundation paints only for your base coat. In glazing / transparency technique, you specifically like the opaqueness of other colors.

For a lot of you guys: base coat your mini in balck, then use these paints to get a great cover.

I've actually been really happy with the foundations. They are a little thicker than other paints and they go on nicely in one coat.

I'd be happy to use nothing but Foundation Paints if there were more colours

No, that's actually not MY opinion, although I can understand that it is true for most of us. On a basic to advanced level, The foundations offer a great solution to the opacity-problem of ordinary paints. But when you get to a certain technique, you WANT to have thin paints that are a bit more translucent, and the pigmentation of the foundation paints are just working adversively to that. They are great for use as a base color, but from there on there's mostly ordinary paint.

I agree with dims on this one. They are great for coating your models, or even for simple paint jobs. But once you start shading and highlighting things, I prefer the regular paints.
