Has anyone played against Wood Elves in tournaments recently ?

I was looking at the army book the other day and figured that the Wood Elf army can be extremely flexible and hard to counter but I'm just not sure it's effective without that Treeman or Treeman Ancient.

I've also been reading the Dwarf book in preparation for a upcoming game and I have to say... I just cannot see how a Dwarf army can beat the Wood Elves if they have a couple of woods on their side of the battlefield.

of the times I have played a wood elf army in tournaments, there is usually a treeman. His spell of tangle root (or whatever it is) is quite good, and you can always count on them moving woods to get closer to your units making it a stronger strength hit. They can be tough but a lot of their strategy depends on them shooting the bejezzus out of you. Once you get them in close combat there only toughness 3 and not much for armour. Be carefull of big units of dryads though. They are some kind of tough twigs.

Yes, my regular gaming buddy threatened to do this to me once, until that is, I sorted those big lumbering bark boys out with Tyrion :) He cuts through Treemen like a knife through butter. In fact in my last game against Wood Elves he killed a Treeman and destroyed a unit of 3 Treekin. He's not much good against rank and file through so if the Woodies see Tyrion on the table they should deploy their Treeman (Treemen) near a unit of Eternal guard or even just spearmen for the rank bonus.

HAHAHA TREEMEN RULE!!!! btw. is that "a limentation of dispairs" worth the 25 points? cuz if you think about it. if that thing sucseds an you hit the army geniral with it causing 3 wounds killing the geniral that could end the game in one turn!:

my perfict treeman anchent!

treeman anchent 325
a pageant of shrikes 25
a murder of spites 25
a muster of malevolents 25
a befuddlement of mischiefs 25
total 425

what cha think of that? perfict balance between long range and CQC attacks (CQC = close quarter combat)!

In the last four tournaments I've been two Treeman pop up only half the time in the Wood Elf armies, and usually only as part of a themed force, e.g., one guy had a treeman and hordes of dryads. They're a bit like the Anvil of Doom vs. Lord on Shieldbearers for Dwarfs - constant debate over which is better

In my last game a unit of Plaguebearers with Herald charged the treeman, I won the combat, he failed his Leadership roll (yes, even being Stubborn on 8) and I of course pursued...bang, dead Treeman. He's decided that he will never take one again as every time we have played the Treeman has died.

When I take a treeman, an ancient, (or on occasion both) I always take a BSB... rerolling your stubborn break test is MUCH more effective... treeman have no static CR, however they can break ranks... strangleroot misfires just do nothing (unlike a war machine misfire) and no to hit rolls needed... the above post saying they're only T3 with no armor is incorrect... T3 with a 3+ AND a forest spirit ward with alot of wounds... plus strangleroot can be used to stand and shoot, NO line of sight required!

A treeman is a worthy investment for a WE force, however you have to play him right... SCR is not something he has, and you have to not throw him against special characters... now the ancient with the annoyance of netlings is a great combo and should immediately challenge every combat - so your special character / regular character / champ is now only hitting on 6's - increases survivability considerably, especially if you have a unit of wildriders ready to slam into the flanks to take away that rank bonus. (with the FAQ even the dreadlance is a roll off) I also throw on the cluster of radiants for the extra dispel die since if you bring an ancient you aren't bringing a weaver and therefore need some help with the magic defense.

just avoid the flaming dwarven cannons and bloodthirsters and you should be okay!
