As many of you probably already know, I'm currently working on my Dwarf Army. I've come across a couple of issues I wanted to address before going too much further with them because one of my questions directly affects the way I am going to build a unit.

First (And by far the most important): Whats the best way to build a Ranger Regiment? At present I am planning to build a unit of 24 Quarrellers w/Great Weapons & Shields. I figure this will give them a nice ranged attack while still providing them with plenty of kick when they get into the thick of things.

Second (More of a curiosity question): Has anyone else got the same model in the Daemon Slayer blister as they have got for their Champion in their Slayer Command box? I ended up putting one on a straight slot base and the other on an angled slot base, and I want to paint the Daemon Slayer a lot nicer. That way it should be easy enough to tell them apart.

I think thats it for now. If I can think of any other questions I'll be sure to ask. Thanks for the help everyone!

your dead on the slayer champ being the dragon slayer in teh codex, there is no difference so make use of him either way. I do that. Also the best way to make use of rangers is....to leave them at home and use a gyrocopter. But if you must them, take warriors or longbeards with throwing axes and a big unit. Then support this with a unit or two of miners. I personally think that rangers are now worth their weight in salt. Dwarves stay back and shoot and then kill whats left. Isolated dwarf units or any unit for that matter get eaten and since your normal dwarves cant march fast...at all... its hard to support rangers. I have used them in the past as a unit of 10 to get better shots and a unit of 20 for combat res. Both failed to impress me at all, so i dont use them anymore.

Not much help Guardian, but its my experience. they are only worthwhile if you are playing a special scenario, normal games i would leave them alone.

I agree I have never really found a use for Rangers, and when i have used it has only ever been in units of 10-12 in small games and that was BEFORE i got a Gyrocopter.

While a Gyrocopter doesnt have the same firepower it is by far the better choice.

GC = 140pts
10xRanger Quarrellers w. Shields, GW = 150pts

Yes you get 10 S4 shooting attacks with Quarrellers, but they are going to get monstered being that close to an enemy. So arent worth it.

However, a big nasty unit of Ranger Longbeards with a Thane equipped with the RO Brotherhood can be used as a nasty road block. Give them Throwing Axes, stick them in a forest and give the Longbeards a nice Runic Banner, say RO Stoicism and you can do some damage.

Only issue is any units that hit the rangers cant be shot at with your missle troops which defeats the purpose of them.

For Slayers - I paint most with Orange Hair and 1 or 2 with Red Hair to use as Champions/Heros

I've been toying with the idea of using Josef Bugman to get a unit of Longbeard Rangers in addition to the Quarreler Rangers. That way I would be able to use two Ranger units in a game. Either I could place them near each other to give each other support, or I would place one to each flank of the enemy army to force them to divide their attention. If they turn to face my Rangers, they expose their flanks to the rest of my army, if they dont I have my Rangers in position to hit them in the flanks. I'll probably watch this thread to see what other adivce pops up over the next few days then look at my options for Rangers again. Maybe once I've had some time to review what everyone has to say I'll have a better idea of how I want to do them. (Keep in mind that I enjoy 4000-5000pt games most of the time when I get to play. So I have plenty of points to throw into a unit like this.)

As for the Gyrocopter, I have one built that I'm going to primer next week. I'm sure its going to see a lot of use! I hope to pick up a second one at some point.

I think I'll end up painting the Slayer Champ with more silver, painting the gems on the shaft of his axe like metal rivits and simple gold rings, and the Daemon Slayer with more gold and gems on the shaft of the axe and his rings.

Thanks for all the feedback guys, it's very helpful and gives me a lot to think about.

I think the biggest problem with rangers compared to similar units in different armies is that rangers are not skirmishers. Because of that, if you take them as Quarrellers you will either be spending points on a "shooty" unit where most of the unit can't shoot, or you will end up with a smaller unit that won't be as affective.

The only thing I would user rangers for is to hold a table quarter or take out artillery... and frankly Miners will do a better job at both of those imo (of course they will take up a special slot).

I only ever took Rangers fully expecting them to die and lose me points. Miners are better for flanking abliet more random, and if you play 4-5000 pt games you can have 2 Gryocopters which is a hell of a lot better

You mean the little gold emblems in their beards and on their belts? Yeah those are already part of the models. On the other hand, there are a few emblems that come extra with a couple of the sprues as well.

No problem.

On the up side, most of them should be pretty easy to file/cut away from the model. Also, if its only the emblems that you dont like, you could always use a touch of Green Stuff to cover them and make your own emblems/ornimates on the models.

no, the theme I'm working on for my Army is they live in Sylvania {They where originally from Karak Varn} ,so they don't have the Emblems and what not cause they make noise and can attract unwanted attention.

I agree that is a pretty cool idea - so are you going to give them a darker paint scheme as well?

In that case, look for some of the ventage models. It seems like there are a lot of the older models that dont have any emblems or anything on them.

it came about because of my Vamps and Empire, I wasn't sure if I was going to play Dwarfs or just Zombifi them like I did the Goblins but after looking over the Dwarf Book at GW I was talking about it with an Employee there{I do that a fair amount.} and one thing led to another and I bought the book. after looking at it a home with my Empire and Vamp books to I wanted to keep my army's close but do different things with them. I like doing things different.... I like to break the mold so to speak. so I started looking at the destroyed/lost Holds and came a cross Karak Varn and it just grew from there.

I haven't finished the color scheme but I have the basics. sorry about the bad pic, I can take pics of my models. Basically I use Gunmetal on the axe head, Horns and top of the helmet, Chain mail and the shield front{I shave the symbols from the shields.} I used Tin Bitz on the metal piece that holds the axe head to the wood shaft, the rim of the helmet, boarder of the shield and the edges of the armor. I used Shadow Grey on the hair and Beard and dry brushed Space Wolf Grey over top. all in all it's not to bad, I'm debating about the sleeves{maybe black or dark leather... or both.} I'll paint the face with dwarf flesh and probably dry brush highlights of the Tallarn Flesh... or the other way around.{I can't remember which i lighter.} for hair differences I was thinking Space Wolf Grey with a lighter Grey... and Shadow Grey mixed with different colors.

Cool, I'll keep that in mind. though I do kind of like the Plastics, they are so much easier to convert... I like converting.... my mind comes up with different ideas some just aren't possible others need to wait for another time, some I just can't do right now and others have come to fruition.
