I'm going to be dull here and say Temple Guard. Many a Dwarf Slayer fell to my priceless Temple Guard and Slann of course :)

I used to love the salamanders in the previous rules but they're not as good now. They used to have a range of 24 inches.

the special slot skinks with the posion attacks.

Why? because I've seen them take down a giant, twice.

Otherwise just straight up Saurus Warriors, cause they are one of the best core infantry units in the game.

Yeah I have to second skinks----Those tiny buggers can fill a lot of battlefield roles. Personally I like Southlands skinks armed with shortbows better than Lustrian skinks armed with javlins---I like the increased range--I never go into battle without AT LEAST 75 skinks and yeah, because of their poison attacks they are the bane of high toughness troops like giants, orges, dragons etc. Orge armies drop like flies to skinks--plus rolling leadership on 3 dice and picking the best two has pulled my butt out of the fire inumerable times. They can scout and skirmish in a nutshell they are awesome!!!!

I think they put Southland skinks in there because of the number of skinks already out there with bows. I think one of the past rule boxed sets included Lizardmen (with lots of skink bows) vs Brets.

Anyway, I was very upset to see skink short bows removed from the standard army list. They were even more awesome in the past than they are now because of the limitations of the Southlands list. I used to love making pin cushions out of my friend's bearded stunties :)

Yeah me too--that is where the bulk of my lizardman units came from, that brets vs lizardman boxed set of ages past--so I guess I am playing southlands for the time being. I like the older Slann model much better then the new one anyway.
In the few games I have used them since getting back into the game they seem to do just fine. I liked it better when you could throw in a krox along with a standard skink fighting column for extra hitting power and the ability to cause fear --now that was cool!! But I really like having 2 skink hero level characters for the price of one saurus character that the southlands army list allows. It lets you really dominate the magic phase in lower points cost games.

I'm moving more towards chameleon skinks, skink skirmishers and cold one riders in the new 7th ed rules. I'm not sure Slann and the temple guard are as important as they used to be in the 6th edition.

Hmmm... I'm a bit undecided now... I'll give it a few more battles and let you know ;)
