I was kind of wondering what some of you guys think would be a good starting army. Currently all I have is a Chaos Chosen Command unit and a Chaos Champion. I also have some Maurader units on order, and some Chaos knights on order also. But given these units and models what else would be good to have? Also I haven't been able to find anything concrete on it, but would I be able to institute an Chaos Hellcannon? I want to have a nice melee combat unit as I'm all about the melee more then I am magics and ranged. I also understand that WoC don't really have any type of ranged units. Any help would be great.

I would recomend getting a box of Chaos Hounds. Run them in two lots of 5 to screen your knights, march block and take out soft targets like warmachine crews. They are dirt cheap to field and can save the more expensive regiments - they are also good to flank charge and negate rank bonuses.

You said that you prefer melee to magic but in the smaller battles when you are starting, but I have found that you are better off taking a Chaos Sorcerer as your general as it gives a little bit of ranged offence, magical protection and can still go toe-to-toe in close combat if needed.

Lastly some Marauder Horsemen will increase your flexibility and prevent you from being out-manouvered.

Hope this helps.

It helps out big time. It's still a fairly new army that I'm building at the moment and I'm trying to work my way up.

Everytime I come here I remind myself that I want to do a unit write up for the WoC book to help out for things like this.

You're right about the complete lack of ranged attacks in the army although if your looking at a hell cannon, might i suggest a Chaos Giant as well. Put one at each end of your line, (Both terror causing and potentially destructive) gives you some ranged ability and a lot of tactical options.

Taine.

I say nay-nay to Hellcannon.

Read the stats and everything online, before the WoC book got published.

I don't know if it changed, but it wasn't the best unit that Chaos could field and the point was hefty too. You'd get outgunned and waste whole lot of point for very little damage against armies like Dwarves or Empire and such.

I like the Giant too, with Mark of Khorne he can wreck up chariots in one hit which is always fun!

Another good idea that I use is taking a Warshrine. 120 points, and it gives your hard hitting units (Knights, Chosen) even more bonuses. Definately look into it.
