do you have a rough idea of the type army he will be bringing? Is it against Warriors of Chaos, Beasts of Chaos, or Cheese of Cha....err, daemons of Chaos? You need somewhat different tactics against each.

Agree with weasel, plus, what sort of army would you personally think of playing. Eg missile, magic, ranked up units, artillery, chariots etc

Hi Errata, welcome to the forum.

If he's taking Warriors of Chaos you should be able to outmaneuver him with cavalry and get around his flanks. Also, you'll want to take some repaeter bolt throwers to deal with the Warriors armour saves.

I'd take some Dragon Princes (don't bother with Silver Helms, Dragon Princes have a great "punch per point").

Also, I'd take 4 repeaters (at least) and some Lothern Guard to provide them with protection.

Consider Eagles for march blocking (they're usually worth their points) and possibly even an Eagle mounted hero with a magic bo (I cannot recall the name, but it delivers str 5 shots). Such a hero can be useful for march blocking and getting to more difficult to hit targets or those out of range.

Phoenix Guard are superb for holding up the enemy with their ward and armour saves but you'll need to make sure they have some close combat support such as sword masters.

Swordmasters should be your primary fighting unit. Chaos are short on ranged missile fire so they will be less vulnerable than they are against many other armies.

If you expect their to be wood terrain then I'd take some White Lions and the Banner of Ellyrion for a mounted unit. In fact you might want to take some small units of Reavers to pester and get i the way of any Marauder Horsemen he takes and to kill the inevitable warhounds.

I'd site back with most of the army and wait for him to come to you. Flank with your cavalry and keep the core in the center with plenty of bow units and your reapers which of cource you should try and place on a hill if possible.

Do you know anythign else about the game, eg. any special victory conditions, board size, terrain etc ?

Sigmar is dead on. I am primarily a Warriors player and the things that give me the most trouble are A) things that ignore armor saves, B) heavy shooting, C0 mobile armies and D) "big strength" strikes.

To face that, High Elf armies have
A) Repeater Bolt Throwers. Find a hill if possible, shoot over his screen at his Knights, Dragon Ogres, Warriors...ignore the Marauders as you can handle them with your core line troops.
B) Since even the Lothern Sea guard (if I recall correctly) can have bows with spears, they can shoot at those marauder screens, for example. Or even at the Knights. You only have to do 1-2 casualties against the heavily armored stuff to be really effective. You will probably hit better than 50%, wound 33%, and kill 18% even against Knights so it takes you approximately 33 shots to get a kill. Well worth all the frustrating times of "I hit you 20 times and did not even wound you once" when you get that inevitable "I only hit you 3 times, but 2 killed" turn.
C) this one just takes practice to learn how to move your vital troops out of the way so you can flank charge, rear charge and so forth to remove his shield benefit.
D) As Sigmar pointed out, Swordmasters are great. Always strike first with a -2 to Armor Save, if you can hold your enemy up in front and flank charge, now he will save on a 4+ with his Knights instead of a 2+ f you hit in front. That is your preferred tactic.

Best way to hold in front is some unit with decent numbers or strong saves who is stubborn.

Hope that helps.

hello George, that's some army to start with!
i agree with most of the above.
definitely Dragon princes to flank(6-8 size unit, poss with banner of ellyrion).he'll have marauders as cover, which is better for you(unless slaanesh)because you can flank'em,break'em and overrun and flank charge his tank unit of warriors
2 small units(no command) of swords combined with lion chariots are devastating
can't do without bolt throwers.i would take 3,splitting them up and using them as bait for enemy horse and hounds-this is where, depending on your deployment and his overrun, you can chop up chaos knights with ease.also using 3 means you can take more eagles-consider more than 1 and have fun with a flying noble with a reaver bow which is also good for hunting his flying mage.
shadow warriors will be one of the most useful march blockers given tree cover and if you are able to field white lions race these to combine their attacks.
most important to any high elf player though,i have found are the combinations you are able to deliver:
spears and/or phoenix guard to receive the charge, swords to follow up,dragon princes to countercharge his second wave
archers as rolling cover for chariots, swords to follow up
..and all the while bolt after bolt thins them out.
if your oppo isn't immune to psychology, try to completely wipe out his weaker units on turn 1.theres a good chance of early rout through panic.

about dragons..i had some success recently against dark elves in hilly wooded terrain with a dragon mage which, consensus will tell you,is a risky choice to include in your army.i decided beforehand that he is the sacrifice, support him with two eagles, deploy two outflanking units of DP's and two lion chariots centrally with two bolt throwers in the channels;two units of archers-one on the move, and a largish unit of phoenix guards supported by 6 swordmasters, the most latter of which broke and destroyed a unit of twenty spears and 5 cold one riders with their general!
let us know how you get on
