On the face of it (and without any practical experience of using them), I find Foe-render beast herd champions for Gor / Ungor units a bit on the costly side in terms of points.

Are they usually recommended for leading large units only or do players tend to always put them in or leave them out ?

My personal view so far is that I would only deploy one with a large unit and exclude from all units of less than 20 models. They just seem too expensive in points.

I don't honestly think you can afford to not take a Foe-Render if you are using the Beast Herd for Ambushing. In fact, I don't think you can afford to not take a Foe-Render in any Beast Herd you take, unless its being specifically used to flank charge or engage and clear out some skirmishers. But if you're ambushing, even with a small 5/5 squad, I think that extra leadership to get your Beast Herd on the board is vital.

You know Smack, I think you must be right. I've just checked the percentages of rolling a 6 or less and they're not good !

Rolling a 6 or less is : 41.66% whereas
rolling a 7 or less is : 58.33%

That is more of a difference than I had expected.

I have another related question about the Horn of the Great Hunt but I'll post it in a new thread (I'm hoping "google searchers" will find these posts an join in the discussion)

sorry this is a little off topic, but do foe renders increase your leadership and get a bonus attack? and how many points exactly are they worth? Im interested cos a mate is starting a beasts army and his first purchase will be a beast herd.

Yep, leadership 7 and an extra attack. I think they're about 27 pts but I don't have the book handy.

They're actually quite expensive really.

An extra 20 points for a Foe-Render, plus 10 for champion and 5 for muscian. You just can't afford to not spend 20 points for that extra leadership with Beasts.
