I'm becoming a bit obsessed with the lower than usual leadership for the Beasts of Chaos Army and I was just looking through the magic items to see if there's anything useful to help mitigate it.

Roll on the Horn of the Great Hunt, it seems to me that this is an absolutely must have for an army using the ambush rule - I'd call it an American Express item ! If you know what I mean

+1 leadership and Foe Renders in each unit improve the likelihood of a unit appearing for the ambush by about 73% !

It goes from 41.66% to 72.22%, that's a heck of a leap.

Why might you not use the Horn of the Great Hunt. The only reason I can think of is if you;re not ambushing very much (or at all) or you absolutely must have a different combination of magic items to fulfil your tactical plans. It seems like a steal at the price.

I'd say it depends on the points you are using and the amount of Ambush units you are using and how important they are to your strategy. If you only have them to cause a nucense and not really as part of your plan to crush your enemy, they it might not be worth it. If you only have one unit in Ambush, again it may not be worth it. However, if thats a big unit and important, the 30 points may well prove to win you the game if you get the big unit out in the right place.

However, on the other hand of the arguement, considering what else there is for the Beasts of Chaos magic items wise, if you have any Ambushing units, it might well be worth taking purely because there isn't much more to choose from. Unless you wanted another minotaur or something.

Smack, I can't argue with that. I think the item is worth taking for a single large unit. Like you suggest there are not a huge number of conflicting magical item options.

On second thoughs, unless I'm going Ambush heavy, I'd never take the horn, as I could fit an extra Minotaur or Ogre or 2 Centigors which would be much more usefull.

the basic idea is 30pts in another unit of chaos hounds to pester, bait and flee or just generally get in the way. on the other hand as both of you have mentioned it's really good if you are going ambush heavy

just remember it MUST go to the army general, and it MUST be on the table to use it, so don't wait too long to use it

I think you're probably losing one of the greatest advantages of a BoC army if you do not go ambush heavy so I'd be inclined to take the horn on most ocassions.

true, ambush is one of the major strengths of beasts. it's the fastest and safest way to get them past the gunlines/magic of other amies. even a failed ambush unit could take of contest a table quarter
