first things first: Models are spray coated with either black or white primarily for the paint to stick on the model properly. The choice to use black or white is one you make yourself: what do you prefer, or, as most painters decide, this is based on the overall color scheme of the model - lots of metal or really dark colors rather use black undercoat, while light colors, lots of skin etc prefer white.

Things like grass and snow should be applied AFTER the model has been fully painted. Get some PVA glue, thin it a bit down with water, and 'paint' that on the surface, then dip the base into the tray of grass/snow. Easy huh? Tips:
- for grass, while the glue is still drying, first bloww off all excess grass, then use a dry brush and stroke the grass upwards so most strands stand up!
- for snow, after applying a layer of snow, add one or two extra layers on top of that to thicken it a bit for more realism.

have fun!

Are you putting sand under the grass/snow? If you are put think on berfore you undercoat you mini, then once its dry undercoat in your choice of colour.

once you have completed painting on you mini ( include paint the base with earth colours. you the put PVA on (thinned downed) and apply grass. if you want snow, i turn to still put grassonto the bases and then 2-3 layers of snow, you don't have to put the grass on at all its just choice i just like my snow really deep and uneven

Great tipp, learned something about snow basing that I didn't know.

Gonna print that off...

Anyways, what would you suggest for the urban basing?

what kind of urban are you thinking of?
- cobbelstones - add a layer of putty on the base, and sculpt the stones. Easy enough (hehe)
- ruins - add some rubble (bits and pieces of leftover frames, etc.). Maybe even combine that with a cobblestone basing.
- Flagstones - scukpt them from putty too.
- oh and there are so much more ideas!

I was thinking more on scale of 40k city urban setting, without any one of those big basing piece some players seems to like.

AKA Armaggedon Steel Legion style setting.

Well you can get come plasticard, some very small rivetts, and thin drinking straws (one thats have the bendy bit work well too) and also in ou have the ammo create set for scenery lying around.

cut the plastic card to covered you desired base. not decise where you want things like pipes and rivets.

Place these down ( riether th rivet you just one the head so cut the bar part off i tend to cut thin strips of platic card and glue these on the bases and the rivets on top.

For pipes i scrape a little groove into the pasticard and then glue the straw into this.

If you want to you can use the lid from ammo crate or the is a bit of metal to them to sit on i tend to simple cure this into base sizes. this gives you the impression you men are walking on a meta lgangway or something.

Does any of that make sense?

Urban is quite easy to do, i use plasticard and different shaped rod, sprues, sand and random junk on my imperial guard. see below:

after making the bases' i paint adeptus battle grey, 50/50 abg with astronomicon grey, astro grey on its own then white on the extreme highlights. once dry smother the whole base in black ink and once that is dry, i use chestnut ink on the sand.

quick and easy, won't win any golden daemons with it, but looks great for TT quality
