any tips vs tyranids with tau would be much appreciated

Against a nasty 'Nids army? You don't stand a chance! A REALLY nasty army will get to you in turn 2 (OMG!)...! Try to avoid contact as long as possible, deploy as FAR as possible from him, get first turn, duck, hide, take cover, ANYTHING you need to do to at least get a draw. Concentrate onthe easier targets to decrease the number of units that will get to you, because they WILL get to you, and then it doesn't matter if he finds you with a few biggies, or a lot of smaller 'nids. If you try to kill the biggies, you'll probably waste a lot of fire, and end up fighting it all!

Did I sound hopeless? :D

AAARGH! THEY'RE COMING!!! RU---UN!

a mobile tau army with devilfish transporters and some stealth troops to tie up his units wouldnt hurt. But like previousley said, you have to be mobile and try to knock out his hive mind units. With tau firepower this is more easily done than with other armies.

All I can do is echo what has already been said, you'll need to learn his units and what they are capable of in order to prioritise your targets, you have some of the best anti-big-stuff guns in the game, you have to thin his herd and try to disrupt synapse before they hit your lines, or have a strong force ready to counter attack.

Devilfish have already been mentioned but things like Crisis suits armed with Plasma Guns and/or Flamers will be really good at making a dent in his army. Railhead submunitions will make a mess of anything that he has other than Hive Tyrants and Carnifexes. As Tau you are done fore if he hits your lines but you should be cowering behind cover all you can and making him pay for every single step he makes towards your army.
