My friend is a WC player, and he's pretty pumped about his new hell cannon which he intends to field along with as many warriors and knights as he can get. He prefers muscle to magic, which I hope will be in my favor. I usually play dwarves, but have a sizeable lizard force as well. Any suggested combinations for an army list to fight him? Here's what I've got:

2 Slaan Mage Priests
2 Stegadons (Bolt Throwers)
Carnosaur
1 Saurus Lord on foot
1 Saurus Old one on Cold one
2 Skink Cheifs
2 Skink Priests
3 Salamanders w/ crew
10 Terradons w/ riders
7 Kroxigors
20 Temple Guard
24 Saurus on Cold Ones
140 Saurus Warriors (60 w/ Spears)
15 Chamelion Skinks
80 Skinks (half w/ blowpipes, half w/ javelins)

(looking at a 2,500 pt. game)

Unfortunately I dont have time for an entire list, but I do have some advice about WoC.

The primary issue is that the WoC units outclass ours on a unit by unit comparison. Which is pretty darn impressive since we get some great stuff. Therefore, my approach is typically to be magically offensive and focus on running circles around him.

Slann with Lore of Metal will obliterate Warriors of Chaos. But WoC have access to some great magic as well, so if you are going magic offensive you need to go all out. Slann + Engine of the Gods + foot Skink Priest is usually how I approach it.

This is also one rare time where the Rod of the Storm is going to be able to recover its points. Since most of the WoC are Toughness 4, you are going to average 1.7 wounds per Uranon's Thunder Bolt. Since this ignores Armor Saves (WoC big bonus) you can take out a 40pt (without any upgrades, they are typically much more than this) Chaos Knight very regularly and even have the potential of taking out the entire unit if you are very lucky. All that for a 25pt item. Just remember to drain his Dispel Dice and Dispel Scrolls before firing it off.

Make sure to have Terradons to drop some rocks and march block the already slow WoC.

Remember that your Saurus Warriors are going to (on average) lose combat to Chaos Warriors. If you are getting into close combat with Chaos Warriors, it simply *has* to be on your terms. You need a hard hitting flank (a unit of 3 Kroxigors actually do this very well and of course Stegadons).

This is one army where Skink Skirmishers just dont perform well, due to the insane Armor Saves on most WoC. Ranked Skinks are cheaper, easier to throw away, and will serve the practical purpose (redirecting and march blocking) that Skink Skirmishers will be able to against these armored foes.

Also remember that Warriors of Chaos *must* accept and issue a challenge in every battle. You can tool up a Scar Vet to be a character killer and launch him into battle with enemy characters. You know for a fact that you will get to fight the character, and you will be protected from the rest of the unit for the first 1 or 2 rounds of combat. Hopefully enough time to get some support in.

Hope that helps!

Here's what I was thinking:

Slaan - 2 Disciplines - 325
JSoD - Charm of Jag, Sword of Striking, Light Armor, Shield - 143

Saurus x20 - Full Command - 250
Saurus x20 - Full Command - 250
Skink Skirmishers x11 - Brave - 83
Skink Skirmishers x10 - Brave - 76
Skink Skirmishers x10 - Brave - 76

Cold One Cav x8 - Full Command - 330
Temple Guard x16 - Totem of Prophesy, Full Command (with Slaan)- 341
Krox x4 - 220

A. Stegadon - EotG, Priest lvl. 2, Plaque of Tepok - 405

Total = 2,499

I was thinking of maybe dropping a krox, and subbing the skirmishers for regular skinks in favor of another priest.

It looks like you have a fairly solid list there, thats almost exactly what I take for Core choices most of the time. there really isnt much that I would change about it.

I'd probably drop the Standard Bearer from your Cold One unit, you probably wont need it and its easy points for your opponent. Also, consider dropping the size of the unit to 5-6, you dont really need an extra rank (Unless you are playing really large games or against fast opponents and are worried about getting your flanks hit. This will get you a lot of extra points you can spend elsewhere. When I use Cold Ones, I usually like to take 2-3 units of 5-6 models each with muscian and sometimes a champoin.

I wouldnt worry too much about another priest. Between your Slann and Priest on EotG, you will already have a pretty strong magic phase. If you do feel the need for another Priest, take the feathered cloak, . . . . .

Your Skink Skirmishers are probably the better choice. If you do turn them into regular Skinks, consider breaking up your Krox unit and adding them into your Skink regiments. That way you will create a bunch of cheap, Fear causing units. I've had a lot of success with 3-4 Skink/Krox units and a couple of Stegadons in a couple of different army lists.
