THIN YOUR PAINT!!!!!! Trust me, the way I do it is to put the paint on the brush, dip it in water, and apply. It goes on much smoother than nonthinned paint, and for Brets, the smooth emblems and colors is what you're shooting for.

Holy cow- it works!! I was skeptical at first, but it really does thin the paint just right. I just put a couple drops of water onto my work surface to dip in. I didn't need to really dip (submerge) the brush either, I just kind of touched the tip to the water.
Thanks for the tip. It's been probably five or so years since I've added a technique to my routine. I think this will help me improve.

I think the best painting tip I ever got was "Take your time and be careful to keep the paint where you want it." Since then, I kind of treat my painting like a coloring book. I figure out what areas I want to paint what colors and take it from there.

Ummm, In my opinion keeping the paint where you want it is a good idea like Guardian said. Some people sloppily paint an area, although still getting it where they want it, its also on areas where you don't want it. Then you have to go back and touch up on things, which isn't fun.

Remember that Bretonnians are not pretty boys! Search the web for paintings of knights, descriptions of knights, and stories of knights. Implement what you learned into your painting. Our men are not push-overs. They are men of legend, men that most of us have pretended being. They have earned their badges, scars, and stories. Represent this and treat every model as a character in a book and you will find yourself amazed by the outcome.

- A good thing to add into your paint is an acrylic extender. You will only need to add a drop to the paint on your palette, and it will keep the paint from drying out too quickly so that you can get more painting done. The acrylic extender will also smoothen out the colour more and you can use it to make the colour more transparent while keeping it even. Do not use too much of the extender or the paint will become too diluted, and the model might take too long to dry (and it will become much harder to keep the dust off them). To blend two colours the acrylic extender will play an important part since you can first paint one colour, and then use some extender to let the top colour to be translucent to let the underneath colour show through and to hide the dividing line. -Quoted from http://www.essortment.com/all/theartofpaint_rnhp.htm

- I know you have a lot of models to paint. Take your time! Revel in the fact that you will soon be fielding a magnificent army of blues, reds, yellows, blacks, browns... you get the picture. Over the course of my 12 years in this hobby I have yet to see a single army in 40k or fantasy that is more stunning than a lovingly painted Bretonnian army.

I'll do some searching for really good tutorials and set up a post in here with them all together for everyone soon. Tutorials about painting Leather, Horse Flesh, Skin, Earth-Sky Non-Metal Metallics (swords & armor specificly), And a cool little tutorial on how to break down icons so you can paint them freehand with relative ease.

Just arrived and I'm already jumping at the bit to join in the ranks!
