Of those listed it's gonna be swordmasters only cause they are base 2 attacks.

If they were only 1 attack each I'd say white lions.

Dragon warriors have a 2+ armour save. So against a strenth 3 army there is no multipliers to lower the armour save so they still get a 2+ save. Also don't forget that they are immune to fire because of their Dragon armour. This is a positive when going up against the Lore of Fire etc. I forgot it in a game and lost where as it could of made a difference in my charges etc. :o

The swordmasters are the best in combat, no doubt, but the fact is that any average player knows that, and they always get shot to pieces as a result. White lions strength 6 means they can take on really heavily armoured or high toughness creatures with ease (the only other strength 6 attack we have is a single shot bolt) and they have a 3+ save against shooting. and the phoenix guard although only strength 4 have a 4+ ward save that MAKES THEM AWESOME! They just do not die, and if they outnumber the enemy then fear makes them really useful.

So really it depends on who you're fighting. I love them all, but white lions are my favourite. They wear vanquished lion skins as cloaks, come on!

I love my sword masters, especially the way they stand there with their very big swords just looking to kill someone. Sometimes they look just as nice when I am pulling them off because of missile fire and magic. As stated earlier everyone knows they are a meat grinder. And everyone knows to take care of them before they get to you.

I think you also mentioned dragon princes. They are my favorite as they get two attacks, have a great armour save and are immuned to fire based attacks. That includes daemon flamers, fire weapons and magic flaming attacks. And they are horse and those are the closest to real tanks that fantasy allows you to have. Real tanks not steam tanks of the Empire.

Have a sacred incense noble in my swordmasters just in case they get shot at. Really works vs Empire/ anything hitting on 4+ base

Phienix guard have only S4 with their halberds. But even though, they are great defensive unit. If you manage to cast a spell like courage of aenarion on them, they will last forever against any foe. It's just a pity they are not immune to psychology - according to HE army book, they can foresee the future, are resolute and stoic, how is it that they can panic or be scared by terror causing monter?

They're all good in different circumstances.

My staple unit though is Swordmasters. Will always take at least 1 unit of 14, preferably 2 though, or at least a flanking unit of 7. However, was at verterans night the other week and got paired against Ogres. Could really have done with strength 6 White Lions. :/

starts with shadow warriors/reavers/eagles,i reckon.
the thing with swordmasters or any elites for that matter is the combination attacks.they can be devastating if brought to bear.in order to do this you need a stick unit and in order for the timing of the anvil's arrival to be right you need to be able to hold up and direct enemy's movement.shadows are the most useful in the right terrain.
i believe the only stand alone melee damage causer in high elf lists are lion chariots.use them in pairs and they will almost run clear to opposing table edge.used with swords(you've got it,galeac,small/cheap/high output units)following and you have a deadly second wave.if you've managed to get eagles behind and/or rear charge with shadows, flank charge with dragon princes-you can take anything out bar a steamtank.
