any tips on what packages or boxes to buy for starting a lizardman army?

maybe starting out at 500 points

I was thinking of some melee and some of those blowgun skinks and one...hero I think they are called, or would a rare like a salamander be better in that low number?

The Battalion boxed sets are always the best value for money (if you want to glue the figures together yourself).

Lizardmen Battalion at Games Workshop

The contents...

"The Lizardmen Battalion contains two regiments of Saurus (12 figures each), a regiment of Cold One Cavalry (8 figures) and 24 Skinks. "

Not a bad start really. I'm not overly impressed with cold ones though. Great miniatures but a bit on the expensive side when it comes down to points cost.

There'a always eBay too.

I'd have to agree here. The box sets will work well as a starting ground. It gives you a decent number of models to start and in almost every case it's the core units your going to basing your army around (in this case skinks and saurus warriors).

Just thoughts.

Also, the battalion boxed sets in particular are designed as discount boxed sets so they should provide the best value. Don;t forget eBay though, that's even better value.
