I was happy enough with my forest project that I decided to build a second gaming hill for myself. Being fairly new to the game I know I appreciate guides/help with simple projects. As a result I figured I would take a couple of pics of my hill as it progressed and post them.

Step 1:

Assemble your tools & supplies:
1 Thick sheet of insulation
X-acto Knife
School Glue
Green or brown paint (Cheap stuff)
Flock

Optional:
Gray or black paint
Static Grass
Rock, or some other rough surfaced object.

Step 2:
Mark out and cut out your hill before slopeing the sides. Start with the larger, bottom part and make sure its large enough for a regiment AND the top part of the hill to fit comfortably onto it. Then cut out the smaller, top part of the hill, make sure the top part of the hill is at least large enough to fit a war machine or regiment hen finished. Cliff Option: Make both parts of the hill so they can line up making a sheer cliff. Only round the top part of the hill on this side a little bit.
Image

Step 3:
Glue the top part of the hill in place, be careful to line everything up where you want it. Allow plenty of time to dry. Cliff Option: If you are making a cliff, make sure everything lines up correctly and do any last second trimming before glueing.
Image

Step 4:
Cliff Option: Take a rock or some other object ith a rough, irregular surface and roll it around on the cliff face. You want to push har enough to leave a rocky pattern on the styrophome, but not so hard that you damage it.
(Will post pics at a later time, my glue is still drying)

Step 5:
Paint your gaming hill with the green or brown paint. Flock as desired. Cliff Option: Paint the cliff face grey or black. Dry brush some lighter grey or use a black wash to bring some dimension to your cliff face. Put a drop or glue in a couple of the deeper crevices you made with your rock and place a little static grass to it giving the impression of small plants clinging to the surface.
(Will post pics at a later time.)

I WIP pic with a Spear Chukka & Night Goblin regiment for scale.

I am making the cliff largely as an experiment, at some point in the future I want to make a three teir hill with a cliff on one side. Then I plan to make a darven mine in that side of the hill.

Hey those hills look nice! But what kind of insulation is that??? I was under the impression that all insulation is thin fluffy sheets...

Go into your local lumberyard/hardware store. You should be able to find sheet insulation at any Menards, Lowes, or lumberyard. I got mine for free from a dumpster at work (They were doing some construction at work a while back). But I've seen it for $6-$8 a sheet before (4ft X 6ft.)

. . . . . . . I really need to get back to this project dont I?

Alright cool thanks! Ya I've made a 4x4 table and some scenery of my own (I might post some pics to see what people think of it) but I'm looking to upgrade to a 6x4 for bigger games and some more professional looking scenery. The expensive pat of it is going to be buying all the grass mat to cover my board/terrain in as the sand and paint approach turned out way to gritty for my liking. :(

It's looking really good so far Guardian. You didn't make the mistake I did with my very first hill - only dwarfs could stand on it, all the others toppled over :)

I'm looking forward to those terrain pics Samick.

You can buy coloured felt at material stores, for my table I went with a Dark Green. Its a much cheaper alternative, 6x4 cost me $25 NZD (not on special). The official mat cost $60 NZD.

Damn I wish I had put some units in movement trays on my hills before I built the things, have 3 now and two of them can only really take warmachiens :(

Nice work again mate - and Konrad SpotLight sells off cuts of felt pieces really cheap, and you can get little 30cmx30cm squares for about $2 from there as well. What I do is cut them out in nice shapes and just place them down as terrain, e.g., yellow felt = swamp, grey=rough terrain, green=forest, brown=hill etc
