At the moment I am dusting off, stripping back the paint and prepping my old DoW army as my new project. I am a little bit of a loss for which Rare choices to use. I have the Birdmen of Catrazza and a Halfling Hotpot on it's way. Both of these will be great fun to use and will be ok from a game perspective but I would like to hear others opinions on each selection and its value.
From the Generic List: Cannon - Not much to say here. Always a solid, no brainer choice. Good to take if you don't want something more specific. At 85 points you can't really go wrong. Halfling Hotpot - I love this just for the concept. Haven't used it yet but should be along the similar lines to a regular stone thrower. I love the idea of flinging it at Empire, Chaos and Bretonian Knights. No armour save FTW!
From the Regiments of Renown List: Asarnil the Dragonlord - It's a Dragon... enough said. Bronzino's Galloper Guns - Personally I think they are a bit of a gimick. Being able to redeploy your cannons is nice in theory but I'm not sold, especially with the additional cost. Birdmen of Catrazza - As said earlier, I have these and I'll use them for fun but I'm not convinced of their value in a competitive game. Flight is good for march blocking and harrasing the enemy but at the cost you could get two regiments of Light Cavalry and do almost as well (and be more survivable). Perhaps if they made the crossbows regular instead of light they might be better. Giants of Albion - A bit mixed over this selection. For most games if you take them, that's it for Rare. I like a bit more flexibility and apart from Hengus they are nothing special in terms of Giants. Having an extra caster is not too bad but he is only level one. Tichi Huichi's Raiders - They're not tough enough to be heavy cavaly, no ranged weapons to be effective as light cavalry. The only role I can see these guys in is as flank chargers/warmachine killers and the stupidity makes that unreliable at best.
Misc. Giant - Another good choice, having a big terror causer seems to be par for the course in any army these days and this fits the bill quite nicely. Goblin Hewer - Have't used one yet but it is definately on the "To Get" list. From all accounts it is great against most infantry.
If I have forgotten any, I am sorry. Please add them to the list. I would really like to hear other DoW generals ideas on he best combos, especially in the 2000-3000 points bracket (2 Rares). At the moment I would probably tend towards a Cannon + Goblin Hewer combo. If you feel like I am wrong on any of the above points, please realise that they are just my personal opinion, if you have a counter argument feel free to express it.
