Hi guys,

I'm about to start my Nautican Army collection - if you don't know what I mean, congratulations on your release from jail or your escape from the remote desert island ;)

Anyway, I have a couple of questions...

1) I'm going to try to "dip" some crypt ghouls in sand to see if they look anything like I imagine sandgangers might do. How do I get the sand to stick, what glue should I use ? Should I paint them first or afterwards or both ? The sandgangers look something like this...

Image

Another thing about the sandgangers, I would like to create some "less formed" sandgangers at the back of the unit. The best idea I have come up with so far is to get some "oven drying clay/putty" and try to model that but I'm not sure I have the skill. I need the end model to look "almost" bipodal, as though the sand is gradually forming into a body. The front ranks need to be more defined (hence my idea to use crypt ghouls covered in sand) but the rear ranks can be less and less defined.

2) I would also like to try and convert some skinks into Crest Riders, I can work out how to add some fins/tails etc by myself but I want to try to create a wave to embed them in, as though they are using their Breaking Wave Charge into combat.

Does anyone have any ideas how I could do that ?

Here's a pic to spur your imagination...

PS. pics belong to Gareth Pannan who drew them for the Nautican Project and has given his permission for them to be used for Nautican purposes.

For your sand guys just notmal PVA befor you undercoat them should work but i wouldn't put it all over then just the large areas. i think you will loose too much detail on the face and hands and such... unless that what your after, i'd also thin about cutting ut most/all of the spikes and stuff off them too.

For less foprmed one use the half body coming out of the ground people use for zombies and have i would apply the PVA all over the model as if its still being formed its wont have any of the face of fingles it would when is fully formed.

For the waves, if you have the money there maybe some you can buy of the net is not try using the poly filler that comes in a squeezy tube for fillting gracks in walls and a wet knife. If you find its not holding form too well using a wire frame ( fuse whihc of garden wire would work and all you to get the curl on top of the wave.

thanks very much Kilidath, I'll cut some of the spikes of off the crypt ghouls, I think you;re right about not using too much pva. I quite like the crypt ghuol faces and I think they're about as I imagine sandgangers to be so I might leave these "unsanded" altogether.

With regards to the waves I've been wondering if there are any available on eBay or a modeling store. There must be a demand for them for all the naval based wargames, or at least I would have thought so. I'll check eBay.

Here's a good tip when using the PVA glue: thin it down with water, to a consistency of milk. Then dip the model in really fine sand - not your ordinary hobby type, too big.

For the less formed ones, make a simple sculpt in greenstuff, even with an armature within (make a simpe form out of metal wire, and fill it with putty), the completely cover it with sand as above. Maybe even swap his head for a zombie's, for better detail in the form at the top.

The wave: just sculpt it! Maybe first make an armature first, for solidity. I suggest reading up on some sculpting tutorials and such for tips and heads-ups. Or perhaps start off with a model in plpaster first - easy to form a big form, and touch it up after it has hardened.

Good luck!

Thansk for the tips guys. I'm also considering a pape mache (probably spelt wrongly !) wave for the cresters.

I have a game on Saturday and then Sunday "chores" this weekend so doubt I will make any modelling progress but I will next weekend :)

My models still haven't arrived :(

I have a couple suggestions...

for the Sandgangler, what about the metal gouls. their roughly shaped like that and don't have the extra stuff sticking out of them.

as for the wave.... what about the GW Elemetals, with a little converting the water element might work.

You could convert those to Sandgangers as well with a reasonable coating of sand on them
