Final list page 5

[SIGMAR's note : Folks, please DO NOT link to the GW website photos, save them elsewhere and link to those photos. GW are explicit about not using their "band width" on your own site. When anybody loads this page the web masters at GW will see that the traffic is coming from this forum. I will go through the pics and save them to my own album and re-link them]

Taking inspiration from games workshops own (Staff) debate from 2008, and with Sigmars comment made on Sun Oct 14, I believe it is time that as a forum we roll our sleeves up and have a good debate about our favourite Warhammer fantasy figures and do our best to collaboratively construct a Warhammer Fantasy Battle Reporter Forum top 25 list.

It is not as easy as it might sound, I have tried several time to come up with a list of my top 25 ultimate favourite miniatures, and still cannot get it under 107, I will not bore you all by regurgitating the full list, besides it would not be much of a debate if I was to try and thrust my idea of what should be the ideal top 25, this is after all a joint effort, something for us all to join in and contribute to.

I have thought long and hard about the best formula for this and decided that there was not point in us all coming up with a top 25 of our own and choosing which is best, I don't think that would very constructive. Also the way things have been with the forum recently, if we awaited for people to suggest only one entry, we could wait forever to get enough figures on the list.

I propose that each person that wished to take part give us their top five very favourite miniature, and for interest of reading why they have made your short list, it could be due to fantastic sculpting, ease and enjoyment of painting or because you believe that the model is full of character.

Entries needn't be restricted to special characters. The are many individual sculpts out there of basic troop type, it would be wrong to leave them out entirely, an entry could be a units such as the Ever Queen with her Maiden Guard, or a dynamic duo such as Gotrex and Felix, or even a war machine such as the wacky doom diver. If it is a special character which version are you putting in your top 5, maybe you prefer the old Throt the Unclean to his newer incarnation, if so say so.

If you notice that another member has selected a model you wanted to include in your top 5, don't worry about it, that just goes to show how good a miniature it is, and makes it more likely to make the top 25.

I believe that this way we will have an original list that comes to more that 25, when this is achieved, we can start to debate to whittle the list down to our final. I think it is best to leave the debate to this point, so not to dishearten anyone who may have selected models you don't agree with, as stated this is to be more of a collaborated effort.

For interest the final list from the Games Workshop effort was as follows:

#01 Archaon
#02 Be'lakor, the Dark Master
#03 Chaos Dwarf Lord
#04 The Green Knight
#05 Wood Elf Lord with Great Weapon
#06 Heinreich von Kemmler
#07 Dwarf Lord
#08 Valten, Exalted of Sigmar
#09 Chaos Dragon Ogre Shaggoth
#10 Skasnik and Gnobbla
#11 High Elf Dragon Prince on Dragon
#12 The Emperor, Karl Franz
#13 Young Dragon
#14 Halfling Hot Pot
#15 Slann mage-Priest
#16 Tyrion, defender of Ulthuan
#17 Wood Elf Spellsinger
#18 Hellcannon
#19 Dark Elf Executioners
#20 The Giant (Marauder Giant)
#21 Famous familiars
#22 Hrothogg, Ogre Captain
#23 The Lord of Change, greater Daemon of Tzeentch
#24 Deathmaster Sniktch
#25 Crom the Conquerer

Finally, you know the adage a picture paints a thousand words, so use plenty, here's one to kick off:

Now I must away and think about my top 5,

Ooo! Almost just listed straight off there.. No.. Shall have proper think..

Im afraid nostalgia is going to be a big influence. But that's got to be down to 'character' so I guess it's ok?

I thought there would be more interest in this, may be I have a bit more spare time than others.

I have my list of 5, unusually for me none are mounted:

1 - Sigvald the Magnificent
2 - Woodelf Way Watcher Lord
3 - Krom the conquerer
4 - Grimgor Ironhide
5 - Female Kislevite scout (Mordheim)

I will explain why later, but for me the key word is dynamism, each of these figures look ready to kick ass!

Well, I know what model is in number 1 for me. The Green Knight. I'll have a look at the list and see if I do not find other four models.

Okay, here is my list of 5, it was not easy and I had to knock quite a few favourites through my decision making process, in my also ran list I would include Archaon, The Green Knight and also the Wood Elf Waywatcher Lord with bow, as they are all stunning models. However I felt that this being the case other forum members may well list them in their own top 5, so they may well still make the list, and in fact the Wood Elf appears to have been put forward already.

My Top 5:

1, Thorgrim Grudgebearer (2005)

The mighty high king of the Dwarves Thorgrim Grudgebearer of Karak a Karaz, a fantastic sculpt of the high king on his throne of power, held aloft by four trusted warriors, the detail of this miniature show Thorgrim in all his majesty, surrounded by his heirlooms such as the axe of Grimnir and the great book of grudges, the model is a great centre piece for a Dwarven army.

Image

2, Tzar Boris of Kislev on Urskin

A sculpt that shows the might and shear power of this bear mounted warrior, with glave in hand and bearing to winged back banners, you can imaging him charging down the Kislev steppes toward a Kurgen horde.

Image

3, Josef Bugman (2008)

The master brewer of ales has been designed many times over, I have three of these different models in my collection, but my favourite is the 2008 Aly Morrison version that could be purchased at Bugmans bar in Warhammer world. This version comes with interchangeable arms, he can be posed either bearing his axe, or a bar stool. Also the detail of the sculpt from the celtic edging on his cloak to the spilt tankard of beer on the floor make this model stand out for me.

Image

4, The Blessing of Sigmar

A vignette, this sculpt by Dave Thomas shows a warrior priest administering a blessing to the handgun of an empire soldier on the eve of battle, there is a lot of detail in this sculpt and it makes an excellent base filler.

Image

5, Free lance knight (Mounted)

I love this Mordhiem model, it is exactly as I imagine Cervantes icon hero Don Quijote to look, only when this one tilts at windmills, they probably are four armed giants in disguise. This one currently come as a mounted and on foot option.

Still puzzled about old reikguards on foot. I have three really old ones, one with sword and dagger, one with halberd and one with hammer (wielded with both hands)., but I have failed to truly backtrack them. I really would enjoy to find goot photo of hammer-wielding one as I really enjoy its simple dynamics. I has to try to take good shot of mine but thus far I have never had managed to take good picture of figure.

Wow, good reaction so far, and great choices too.

Telepfenion - I had a unit of 15 metal Reiksguard a few years back, but went a bit mental and sold all but two, after discovering they had been removed from the Empire army list. One remains whole and acts as the captain that accompanies my swords men unit he was armed with a sword and pistol, the other a musician I heavily converted into a mounted knight for my unit of 'Blazing suns.' They were a cool, quite individual set of figures.

Son of Khaine - Yes please add pics, I can source some for you if you like. Dwarf Lord, is the that the fellow who is bristling sternly over the pommel of his upturned great weapon?

Grimthorn - nice unique choices. Great pics. I agree on the Teclis front, the older model is definitely better, but I feel that the current Tyrion is better than the original which I found very static and quite indistinguishable from the metal dragon princes.

Coinsmith - I know you have problems posting pics, I can sort that for you if you like, which way watcher is it you've picked, with bow or great weapon?

Keep them coming in folks.

Okay, mine will be a bit different, and yes help with pics please.

The first three are war machines which I think have great character.

1 - Makai makasson and his Goblin hewer
2 - Night goblin doom diver
3 - Halfling hot pot

4 - Queek Head taker (new version) love the way he is leaping into fight.

5 - Konrad von Carstien love the way he is drinking the blood of his victims from his blades mid combat.

Mr Seb, totally agree, the new Tyrion is great, I use the old one as a basic lord (on a better steed).
Chunkymon, new doom diver or the old one?
