I'm designing a 2,500pt army for a game this weekend and I just can't see the point in including Silver Helms. Does anyone else bother with them. I mean, if you're short of points go for Reavers or if you have the points take Dragon Princes.

What is the benefit in having Silver Helms ? Either they are far too expensive for what you get, or Dragon Princes are cheap. Either way, I just don't see why I would ever include Silver Helms.

Does anyone else use them ?

I used to use them alot when they were a core choice. Now I have no idea if I would take them.

Generally I think the best way to consider taking silver helms is in small chunks whom are designed to flank your opponent. Since reavers are not even close to worth their points helms are the closest thing to a fast cav availalbe, so thats the main issue for me!

Plus I want the radio

I have nothing against Silverhelms.
I would use them as Scuurdi said, flnaking force.
5 or 6 vanilla Silver helms ready to flank. 105 points for 5 is not too shabby

Well, with the new FAQ about dragon armor it's hard NOT to take Dragon Princes when they are immune to so much stuff now.

Silver helms seem fairly useless to me. I don't understand why they were moved to the special slot but still have the stats as core troops. They should at least have WS5 instead of 4. The only reason I use them is because dragon princes cost a lot more $$.

I have silver helms put together but not painted. I keep putting them aside as I also am not sure if I will use them. I'm currently debating a group of 5 Reavers for the fast calvary side of things. I used the Dragon warriors in a tournament with a noble and they worked out fairly well for me. I gave them the Ellyrion Standard to ignore difficult terrain. Although in my last game when I broke a dark elves repeater crossbow line I rolled 3 ones on three dice against his roll of 4 on two dice to try and catch them and didn't get them. Further proof as to why I go by Luckless Diceman. It was actually very funny and I ended up losing that game big time.

In comparison to dragon princes it's very hard not to just ignore silver helms as the dragon princes are way more worth their salt in point-value.

What I would suggest is that you buy Silver helms and try to convert them to Dragon Princes or you just try and perswade your opponent to play by what's on your List not on the table(So you could say they were Dragon Princes)

I reckon you just play Silver Helms as an extremely cheap excuse for Dragon Princes. I mean, they are only medium cavalry, but tactically, they are flexible. You can use them as a durable shield, a flanking force, or even as a way to destroy war machines.

In every battle I've used them they've let me down. WS 4 really takes the sting out of their charge bonus and you have to pay 2 points per model to give them shields making them 23 points to the dragon princes' 30. For those extra 7 points you get +1 Ws, +1 attack, +1 leadership and immunity to quite a few spells/magic attacks. They also scare the cr@p out of the opponent, which is never a bad thing. silver helms always seem to die, fail to make proper impact or simply flee far away. I'm not going to use them again unless their rules change.

And +1 initiative. A cumulative +4 statline on 7 pts after accounting for shield. 200% the attacks for 30% higher cost over Silver Helms on a unit of 5 with no command.

Hard to an downside to using Dragon Princes instead. And no barding is not an option for Silver Helms.

The very first change I noticed was the Core to Special move for Silver Helms. I don't get it. If they wanted to remove the all-cav option they could have instituted a "minimum 1 spearman/seaguard unit per X number of pts list" army rule.

I didn't realise their initiative went up too. Yay, even more awesome! But a bullet magnet, no doubt about it.

Yep, Silverhelms are a strange one. What's the point of them when you have dragon princes ?!

Again, I think this might be related to the number of Silverhelm models that have been sold and GW doing their best to fit them in the army list without overdoing the cavalry.

Silver Helms are a better screening unit, and they're cheap. I mean DP are obviously better, but that extra 7pts each does make in small point games

I think you have a good point galeac, Silver Helms might have a place in smaller fights where every point counts a little bit more. Of course on the other hand if every little point counts more, it might make more sense to get more bang for you buck with the Dragon Princes.
