I'm really new to painting minis and would like to improve my skills.
I spent two hours on this guy last night and he doesn't look much better than the ones that I painted in five minutes.

What am I doing wrong and how can I do better? :?

Are you using citadel paints?
Clean your brush often.
Wait till the paint is completely dry before adding another coat.
For gold etc do 2 light coats.

Yeah I'm using Citadel.
I do clean my brush between paints.
I could wait a little longer for each coat (they seemed dry enough).
And I'll undercoat the gold with yellow, yes?

No, use black udnercoat for gold...really!

Use washes! ut on a first coat of the color you want, then apply a coat of wash all over - make it pool in the recesses really good. Then after it haas dried, bring back the color a bit by highlighting in two or three tones, but steer clear of the deepest parts of those recesses!

have a look at ne of my other posts - a painting tutorial for easy painting a dwarf. Should be helpfull!

Funny you should mention that...
I actually saw your tutorial (it actually introduced me to the forums).
I looked through it and tried to do all of the techniques mentioned, but I must've either skipped a part or messed up somewhere along the way.

When I said undercoat with yellow I meant first coat, my bad. :?

Paint another one, taking pictures as you go. If we see the process that you use, we will be able to point out where you can make improvements.

I personally love metallic colours, and I find that 2 coats of shining gold gives a really nice gold colour.
Also love bolt gun metal as opposed to chainmail. It depends on the look your after though.

Strangely enough, I like one coat of Shining Gold. The tiny bit of black you can see underneath looks good I think. Wish I could show yall my guys but, I "can't use the camera". Wanna know why? "Cuz!"

Quotes from a sister who doesn't want her brother to use her camera.

cerealkiller54, your Dwarf Miner takes pride of place as the first mini in our forum and blog slidshow.

Keep posting your mini pics so we can see your progress.

Thanks and all the best,
Sigmar

Mate dont be so hard on yourself I really like him. My first efforts at painting my dwarfs were terrible. that actually looks pretty good.

And the guys are right using washes really helps. that and keeping your brush and painting in thin layers. My major problem when I first started was putting the paint on too thick

Really like the candle btw

For Gold - try Dwarf Bronze, then Shining Gold with Chestnut Ink to finish
