(Having a brain fart here- I'm not sure if I've posted this before; well, I'm posting it now

)Before I started repainting my Empire army, I wanted to reserve a couple regiments to be a marine battalion that would form a wing of my army. I also wanted them to have their own display base, so I settled on building this galley. Now that I know what it takes to get one of these finished, I may, sometime in the future, make a couple more, which would be enough to hold my foot regiments ... maybe. Might have to do two squadrons ... or maybe a greatship.
This galley can comfortably hold 60 figures (infantry-based) on the main deck alone, 12 figures on the forecastle and 15 in the deckhouse (87 figures total). It is 28" long from aft to the ram, and 4" wide. 17" from the waterline to the top of the mast though it is 20" high to the top end of the spar. The sail is a simple piece of pre-printed cotton fabric cut to fit.
The construction started by shaping a 1-inch piece of blue foam insulation into a hull shape. I used bass wood to plank directly onto the blue foam. On this planking, I gradually built up the rest of the ship: forecastle, aft deckhouse, railing and mast and sail. The construction was all surprisingly simple, it just takes a little patience and a lot of wood. The flags and other painted decorations took a while, though.
