It is entirely possible...nay, probably, that I will put this in the wrong area. If so, please feel free to move to correct forum.

I have created a character or two that is far more effective that it would appear at first blush. In fact, when people see the character, the most common response is he costs way too many points and is not worth it.

That is largely because his true value is in the strategy it allows me to roll with, not in what he accomplishes over the course of the battle.

It is my suspicion that other people have done the same and thought it might be fun to post a few characters you have developed and what the strategy is that makes them too cheap for the points...

My example would be my Battle Standard Bearer for the Warriors of Chaos.

I like to give him a shield, the mark of nurgle, mount him on a Chaos Steed, and give him the Banner of the gods. Points comes in at roughly 300 points for guy I never intend to use in battle.

The cost seems ridiculous, particularly when you realize he costs more than a unit of 6 Chaos Knights with full command...but his value is in how I can use the army.

The Banner makes any unit within 6" Stubborn (and makes the bearer cause Terrror

This means my army does not need to worry so much about giving up a flank or rear charge. I simply bunch everybody in a tight formation that allows me to move to my desired position on the field.

No matter how many guys I lose...or why...I basically am going to keep moving straight up the field. Between the Banner making them stubborn and the Will of Chaos allowing re-rolls of panic checks, the army becomes effectively unbreakable. An unbreakable army with 3+ Armor Saves (assuming Chaos Warriors and Knights are the bulk of my army) has to be killed to the last man to get points...and is hard to kill.

Take him out of the equation and I suddenly must worry about getting flank or rear charged by a dragon or pegasus knights or such things. By having him in there, I inflict my strategy on the opponent and can, if not ignore theirs, then certainly make them adjust to face me.

Of course, this formation is vulnerable to things such as cannons and template war machines...but I will take my chances.

How about you? What character builds have you developed where the result is better than it would seem to be just at casual glance?

There is the unkillable dark steed riding master for the Dark Elves. I can't remember the item combo but it's a BSB with a set of items that means it can charge into whatever it wants and hold the whole thing up almost inevitably.
