I just wanted to kinda' poll everyone's opinion regarding cannons? Do you think they are overpowered, fine the way they are, underpowered, and why do you think so?

I think cannons are nasty! As a mainly skaven/wood elf/lizardman player I don't use them much but seem to be on the receiving end quite a bit :( . I think a st10 d6 wounds no save type weapon is lethal in warhammer. When I first started playing WFB a cannon player had to guess the range which with the multitude of variables (movement, diagonal distances across the table etc) made it difficult enough to get spot on with them. as the guessing and measuring of distances have all changed what was once tricky is now a hope-my-dice-stays-within-the-average type exercise. Now it is scarily easy to take out a monster/chariot/single character model. If I could change anything about them, I'd impose a scatter dice system where a hit is exactly in line with where you aim and the scatter dice move the target point d3" to the left or right. My treemen would then have a chance of lasting til turn two :) !

I love cannons. And I am not a player who makes overpowered armies. I do themed ones. The cannon allows an Empire army to have a chance against the monsters other armies can throw at you, and do so with something that is not so fantastical too.

I'm with Batpadre, I love cannons.

The rules are not overpowered as they represent the impact that the cannon had on real battle fields, a well drilled artillery could carry the day for an army. As for my boys the Dwarfs, we rely on them they are our answer to magic and big beast of which we have neither.

I would however bring back guess ranges, as it requires a certain amount of skill and fun to the game, many a time in past gaming, had my first salvoes overshot the gaming table.

Thinking about it further Black orcs have the disciple to use such a strategic weapon.

I quite like cannon, they definately have a place in the game, just no too many in one game please.

I particularly like Bronzinos Gallopers, very useful, manouverable, small bore cannon.

I'd like to embellish my statement by sayin that I'd like there to be different effects for different cannons, dependant upon size length and ammo, really get into ballistics.

I think I see where you going with this, a bit like AP's in 40K and guns that are good against infantry, others against warmachines.

Its an idea, but may be too complicated for fantasy.

I have no issue with a cannon's power. I have issue with its accuracy. The fact that a cannon is in essence a super sniper rifle is ridiculous. You fire a somewhat unpreditable black powder weapon and not only hit your target most of the time, but also individual characters of note. While BS based war machines (Bolt Throwers), even ones crewed by superlative marksmen (Elves), cannot. And that cannot is both to picking out characters (being BS based), as well as hitting in general since you get a single roll that is usually 4+ or worse, meaning it's harder to hit something with a giant bow than a cannon.

That part irks me greatly. If that wasn't as much of an issue I would be totally okay with cannons.

I believe in the accuracy of cannon, however I do not agree with character sniping. The 5 figure rule that applies to most units suffering casualties from shooting should apply here, and the practice of taking out characters in this fashion should be phased out.

I think its okay, its actually representative of history as they carried out the practice of targetting leaders with cannon during the napoleanic wars.
