Fellow Undead Legion players. what do you think are our strongest and sold choice for our Rare Unit remember any army under 2000 pts. may only have 1.

The choice is between:

Blood Knights
Black Coach
Varghulf
Cain Wraiths

who & why?

As someone who plays against VCs the scariest for me is the Wraiths. Yes, they are expensive, but the fact your are Ethereal and can move through terrain without penalty is quite scary and the Banshee's Howl can be devastating. In most armies the only way to beat them is with static CR and they will tie up more than their points worth of troops for a while. Black Coach is still a chariot so one S7 hit will see it crumble if it isn't hoovering up power dice, I'm not a fan of it to be honest. Blood Knights I have never faced but imagine they would be evil, especially as you can raise one each turn through numerous castings. Only time I faced a Varghulf it got Siren Songed into a unit of ASF Daemonettes and it popped in one turn on combat res. Two units of Wraiths would really make me afraid.

Under 2K, the Blood Knights might be a tad too expensive; to make them truly evil, you need the 125 point Drakenhof Banner and that means a decent sized unit is probably 700 points or more.

Teh Wraiths are more tactically flexible as stated above and, depending on who you face, can be your skirmish screen unit to shield your skels, zombies or whatever, as you advance, then do the flank charge type stuff when you get safely across the field.

However, as stated above, these kernels of truth might be demoted to private if you face Chaos Knights (Magic Weapons), Wood Elf Forest Spirits, etc. who laugh at Wraiths but have problems with Blood knights.

If you know who you will face consistently, you will have your answer; if you face a variety of opponents, I think the Wraiths are the better choice.

Including Warband games, 21-4-2 total

I despise playing against Blood Knights. Such an evil set of horsemen. :P

I've never played against the Black Coach, but I can imagine it'd be a bit of a pain in the ass with whatever those magic absorption rules are.

black coach very naughty..if it turns ethereal and flies, you can lose focus on your own objectives.blood knights can be baited for flank attacks like any cavalry and varghulf, once terror tests are passed, won't require too much to deal with.i agree that the wraith threat being the greater

I have tried em all, and must say....

Cain Wraiths with a Banshee for the win!

Black Coach is a very evil and nearly impossible thing to pull down, but... takes away your Power Dice and aint great from turn 1.
Varghulf never served me good, they always get taken down quickly...
Blood Knights, have a few things too say here, HELL NICE MODELS! too many know the stats of a Blood Knight in there heads, and for the points and the frenzied speciel rule, sry this unit aint worth it, when every opponent will too easily make us go in circles, a fast cavalry with the opportunity for escape is maybe 90 points. we pay damn near 400 points for a Blood Knight unit and if they dont get to CC we have already lost.
Wraiths, i love them, ethereal, skirmishers, and the Howl. 275 pts for a unit of 5 to make a meat shield in front of your entire army, and also being able to get a few charges in with a movement of 12" and ranged og 8"

Once faced an 1750 pt Dark Elves, he had ofc a hydra, and for the fact whe aint got a unit for such a beast, we dont got the chance of range fire it down before we come in CC, got my unit of there 7 Wraiths in the side of the Hydra through a forrest, (not a charge jsut moved through forrest) and then in shooting fase i took a chance and Howled at the great beast,... it was a 5 and a 6...
this beast got a LD of 6 and my shot deals wound who all is higher then his LD, my shot is called 2D6 + 2 so. i got 7 wounds inflikted and no armour save meant he had to hit 7 dices all over 4+.... he didnt :D and down went the feared Hydra :D

Just to let you know that the Hydra is actually Ld8 hehe, not that it'd make any difference, unless it regened any wounds as your 11+2 would be enough to kill it.
